Remained illiterate, after military service, Gavino rebels against the paternal opposition and decides to achieve the longed education. The film won the Interfilm Grand Prix at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Palme d'Or and the Critics Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In addition, the directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani are awarded with the Special David at the David di Donatello and with the Silver Ribbon for Best Director.
