The plot
In the film they cross an extraordinary comedy of errors and a tender love story.
The comedy of errors is the one that is developed around Dante Ceccarini (Roberto Benigni).
Dante is a school bus driver for children down; he is good until to unconsciousness and naivety limits.
But above all Dante is the look-alike of Johnny Toothpick.
Johnny is a regretted boss of the Sicilian mafia; he lives hidden for fear of retaliation by another mafia family. When he discovers the existence of his look-alike, he plans his escape by being replaced by the ignorant Dante, so as to direct towards him the thirst for revenge of his enemies.
Dante - Johnny consequently is at the center of an extraordinary and exhilarating series of adventures. In these scenes emerges the really exciting and overwhelming comic verve of Benigni.
The love story is that of Dante and Maria (Nicoletta Braschi), wife of Johnny Toothpick.
Maria pretends to fall in love with Dante to help her husband's plan to be replaced by look-alike and escape.
But then falls in love really with Dante.
