It released today, on the occasion of International Women's Day, Strane straniere, a documentary film by Elisa Amoruso.

Writer, screenwriter and director, Elisa Amoruso has directed in 2013 the film Fuoristrada, awarded at Rome Film Festival.

Strane straniere, based on a story of Maria Antoinetta Mariani and distributed by Istituto Luce Cinecittà, was presented at the Rome Film Festival in the Alice in the City - Kino Panorama Italy.

The film tells the stories of Ana, Ljuba, Radi, Sihem and Sonia. Five women who arrived in Italy more or less from afar, driven to leave their roots from different reasons - love, work, curiosity, or maybe fate - but united from being able to create their own business, reinventing themselves and successfully integrating into a new reality.

Distant from experience and backgrounds, they are jointed by being foreign. Among work, family and relationships, their interwoven stories to tell about what it means to build an identity in another country.

The protagonists

Sonia is the owner of the best known Chinese restaurant in Rome. Relatives and friends meet with her there over a cup of tea or a brandy of roses. Like every year she prepares the Chinese New Year. She follows the rites necessary to drive out the evil and destined to the success of her party. Her husband, missing in China for two years, finally came back. Sonia hopes that the rite of the launch of lanterns protect the future of their love.

Sihem and her partner Ciro live in the country and take care of the animals. Their days are occupied at Sihem association, founded in Aprilia, after her arriving from Tunisia. "The Palm of South" is a piece of the Arab world in the Lazio countryside. But also support for anyone, Italians and foreigners, are in economic difficulties.

Radi has left Bulgaria for a love that has proved a trap. In Italy she discovered a passion for the sea and created a cooperative society made up only by women, the "Bio and sea." In Carrara workshop, she and her friends prepare fish sauces. Since leaving her husband, these women are his family. They share a dream: to go out to sea with a fishing boat of their own.

Ana is Croatian, Ljuba is Serbian. Both arrived in Italy as a Yugoslav, then the war has changed their nationality. They met by chance and immediately recognized and became inseparable. They opened the Atelier, a small art gallery in the center of Rome, who run together even now that Ljuba she moved to Frankfurt with her family.
