The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Original Score. In addition it also won the Golden Globe for Best Picture - Drama, Best Original Score and Best Screenplay, and the BAFTA awards for Best Film, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup. The film also won the David di Donatello for Best Director, Best Picture, Best Producer, Best Supporting Actor to Peter O'Toole, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Editing.
