Margarethe von Trotta

The great German director Margarethe von Trotta celebrates today her 75th birthday.

The directorial debut came in 1975 with the film The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum co-directed by Volker Schlöndorff. The film is based on a novel by Heinrich Böll.

Her real success was in 1981 with the Years of Lead. The plot of the film is inspired by the story of Christiane and Gudrun Ensslin sisters. Gudrun was a prominent member of the Baader-Meinhof Gang. She was found dead with his companions in the Stammheim security prison in 1977.

The film won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 38th Venice Film Festival and the David di Donatello 1982 for Best Foreign Language director.

After so many other films for cinema and television, always characterized by strong commitment and civic passion. Often with important female figures, from Rosa L. (Die Geduld der Rosa L.) (1985) to Hannah Arendt (2012).

Margarethe von Trotta and Italy

Margarethe von Trotta

Just a few days ago it was leaked the news that the German director will be the new president of Bif & st, the international film festival to be held in Bari on  April 22 to 29 next. There is still no official confirmation, but it is expected to arrive on February 25, when it will be officially presented the exhibition.

A sure sign of a deep relationship with our country, moving from afar.

In an interview with Joy Costa of 2003, the director declared, "I can say that there are two parts in me, a northern and a southern-related. The northern portion, which unites me to Bergman, is dark, with leaden skies, the grays, the great outdoors and so much night. But I need the South, which is not that merry, cheerful and chaotic land that the cliché paints. The south is also broken, and possesses a sense of the death and a very deep frequentation of the tragic. Greek tragedy comes from the south, and be able to say is already a way of overcoming the tragic. To the north are not talking, is a skill that is lacking. My affinity and affection towards Italy is always the same, and every time I come to Rome I tell myself that this is just my city, and I would return to live there. "
