Genova Liguria Film Commission: results of 2016 and prospects

Genova Liguria Film Commission

Presented in recent days the results and activities of the Genova Liguria Film Commission in the year 2016.

The data

Genova Liguria Film Commission

A positive balance, after the critical issues of 2014, that underlines significant signs of recovery for the second consecutive year.

The productions have been 110. A slight decline in the number of productions from the previous year, but all other indicators are growing. Especially those that relate to the impact on the economy and local development.

It is significant first of all the presence of international productions, around 25% of the total. Productions that have affected as many as 13 countries. In particular the UK, France, Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Gibraltar, Canada, Japan, China, India, Indonesia, Uruguay.

It is important to emphasize the ability of ligurian institutions to attract film productions in their territory. Despite the Liguria has not appropriated any funds for the incentivization of them and, for this reason, it has paid a price for other regions that have them.

Production days were up 20%. It has increased considerably the average of days of shooting per each production, from 2.42 days in 2015 to 3.16 in 2016.

The working days for technical, local actors and extras are increased  in 2016: they amounted to about 5,500.

The economic impact (the Genova Liguria Film Commission uses to calculate it a standard multiplier used by the European Film Commission) has increased in 2016 by 9,8%. The overnight stays grew by 11.3 % with a result, reported in recent years, second only to 2012.

Creative enterprises and training

Genova Liguria Film Commission

The support activities to productions were of course the main ones. It should be stressed, however, another important aspect on which the Genova Liguria Film Commission has focused in recent years. The construction of a model in which it is possible integrate so virtuous the support to film productions and the growth and development of local audiovisual industry.

With regard to the first point it should be noted the project Polo Companies Creative Cornigliano (PACC), launched in 2008 after the transfer of the headquarters of the Genoa Liguria Film Commission at Villa Brombini in Cornigliano, neighborhood of Genoa  located along the coast.

The PACC has gone from the initial 9 to 60 companies today and from 19 workers to 164, making it one of the top ten cluster of creative businesses in the country.

The companies operate in various fields: production and audiovisual services, photography, printing and packaging, web graphics, communication, video-games and realization of virtual environments, music and theater production, recording and dubbing, drones, set design, casting, web journalism, software development.

In this context, the training becomes a strategic element and various initiatives are been developed in this field. The Creative Workshop, addressed to SMEs and creative professionals. The Game Happens, one of the most important events for training in the videogames industry. And then the MAIA Workshops, targeting young European audiovisual producers; Cinepiano, courses aimed at companies of PACC, the courses for Directors of Photography and Inspectors of Production.

The opinion of the protagonists

We listen to the opinion of three institutional actors: Ilaria Calvo, Councillor responsible for Culture of the Region of Liguria, Andrea Rocco and Enrico Da Molo respectively Director and President of Genova Liguria Film Commission. It is interesting to note that the Head of Culture in her interview announces that it is in an advanced stage of drafting the preparation of a regional call for encouraging the audiovisual industry, which should eliminate the gap with other regions that we first highlighted
