Film

The new Gianfranco Pannone documentary film is dedicated to an old theme: the need for the sacred. A need that seems a thing of the past, but that seems to emerge strongly in the current phase in various forms and expressions of popular religious devotion.

The film is really a trip in Italy, intense and fascinating, to look for this world.

Even today, especially in southern Italy, with "islands" also in the North, the people's faith is a fact, which finds its highest expression in song and music.

And the sounds proposed in this film Sparagna are a clear testimony.

Lascia stare i santi

The precious historical Archives of Luce Institute of Cinecittà, with their documentaries and newsreels vintage, follow this journey into the world of popular religion, which Pannone, with secular eyes, shuffles into an emotional journey between past and present.

Religious images today assume a prominent place in this era that no longer seems to yearn for the sacred, but which deep down people still feel the need, in Veneto as in Sicily, in Latium as in Apulia.

And the words of some intellectuals - reread by Sonia Bergamasco and Fabrizio Gifuni - are there to remind us it: from Silone to Pasolini, from Scotellaro to Soldati, up to Gramsci.
