The film consists of a selection of 114 films / scenes (50 '' each) based on the scenes of 1,422 films produced by the Société Lumière between 1895 and 1905.

The films are assembled according to themes and subjects addressed and divided into eleven chapters.

Some scenes are known (the output from the workshops, the arrival of the train, the sprinkler watered, all Paris view from the Eiffel Tower).

Others absolutely unknown. However, it emerge from all of them the potential of the new media. Some appear very innovative and anticipate trends that will affirm in film only after years.

Frémaux is the director of the Cannes Film Festival and Artistic Director of the Institute Lumière.

The  film by Thierry Frémaux is based on a project of Bertrand Tavernier, Institut Lumière in Lyon and Sortie d'usine productions. The restoration by Éclair Group, led by Institut Lumière with CNC, Cinémathèque Française and the laboratory L'Immagine Ritrovata.

The film is distributed by Cineteca di Bologna.
