Sicilian Ghost Story: a moving black story in the scenery of the Nebrodi Mountains

Sicilian Ghost Story

It is since May 18th at the cinema, simultaneously with the screening at Cannes Festival, the movie Sicilian Ghost Story by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza.

At Cannes Festival, the film, which opened the Semaine de la Critique, received a great welcome, long applauses and aroused emotion. In the same section, the two directors in 2013 had won the Grand Prix and Prix Révélation with the movie Salvo, their first opera.

It's a really nice and exciting movie, suspended between reality and fantastic size, and set in a Sicily far away from stereotyped images, rare and of unusual naturalistic beauty.

The film is inspired by a dramatic event of chronicle: the kidnapping and killing of Giuseppe di Matteo, the son of a mafia's "repentant" in 1993. Santino, Giuseppe's father, was a man at the service of boss Giovanni Brusca. When he began to cooperate with justice, Brusca himself ordered the seizure and then the assassination, after 779 days, making him disappear into the acid.

An episode that also marked the life choices of the directors: "(the episode) This is one of the reasons why we, two of us who still did not know each other, decided to leave Sicily. We have kept in the feelings of anger, indignation for so many years. And then we decided to make it a story "(interview with Giovanni Bogani - The Nation of 19.05.17).

A story or rather "a fable in a Sicily never explored before, a Sicily dreamed. A world of Grimm brothers with forests and orcs, which collides with the plan of reality of which our land is inevitably bearer"
