The film traces the life of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, told by his colleague (and rival) Antonio Salieri, now elderly and confined to an insane asylum. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Best Sound. Moreover, the film was awarded with the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama and Best Screenplay. At the BAFTA awards the film won for the Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Makeup and Best Sound. In Italy the film was awarded with the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Film, Best Foreign Director and Best Foreign Actor while Milos Forman received the Silver Ribbon as Best Foreign Director.
