Le cinque giornate di Milano

The Five Days of Milan were one of the European liberal-national movements of 1848-1849.

They represent one of the episodes of the Italian Risorgimento history of the nineteenth century, a prelude to the beginning of the First Italian War of Independence.

The episode indicates the clashes that raged on March 18-22, 1848 in Milan between the city's population and Austrian troops. Between 16 and 17 March 1848 in Milan, the news spread of the revolutions broke out in France, Austria, Hungary, Bohemia and Croatia. The city, under the Habsburg rule, revolted. After five days of fierce fighting against the Austrian troops under the command of Marshal Radetzky, Milan broke free of the occupants.

The Five Days of Milan in film and TV

The first film about this historic episode was From the five days to the breach of Porta Pia, silent film of 1923 by Silvio Laurenti Rosa

In 1970 the television series The Five Days of Milan by Leandro Castellani starring Ugo Pagliai, Arnoldo Foà, Luciano Virgilio, Pietro Biondi, Romano Malaspina, Raoul Grassilli.

In 1973 the film The Five Days by Dario Argento, starring Adriano Celentano, Enzo Cerusico and Marilù Tolo. A special film that is inspired by the historical event by inserting an original folk narrative.

Decidedly atypical film in filmography of Dario Argento: it is still the only his film not belonging to the thriller or horror genus.

Finally in 2004 the TV movie The Five Days of Milan by Carlo Lizzani.

Two love stories intertwine during the five days of fighting. The protagonist is Giovanni, a young doctor who is close to revolutionary ideals.

Among the performers Fabrizio Gifuni, Chiara Conti, Giancarlo Giannini, Daniela Poggi, Giuseppe Soleri and Ana Caterina Morariu.
