Based on the novel by Leonardo Sciascia. Palermo, early Thirties. Judge Vito Di Francesco tries to oppose the condemnation of the death penalty of Tommaso Scalia, a man who killed his wife, a co-worker and his employer. The film won the David di Donatello for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Costume Design and Best Sound; the Silver Ribbon for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor; the italian Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Actor.
